what is natural stone?
"Natural Stone" refers to a number of products quarried from the earth, used over many thousands of years as building materials and decorative enhancements. These products include Granite, Marble, Limestone, Travertine, Slate, Quartzite, Sandstone, Adoquin, Onyx, and others. They are more than just rocks – natural stone is hand selected from the best, most consistent sources for durability and beauty.
Natural stone products differ in composition, color, and texture even among pieces from the same source. This is usually considered a benefit, lending itself to one of a kind designs and distinctive, dramatic applications.
  • Sedimentary rocks , Sedimentary rocks are the most prevalent rock type exposed on the Earth's surface, created from other materials derived from exposed and weathered igneous, metamorphic or previously structured sedimentary rocks, or biological sedimentation, and compacted into a solid, self-adherent mass. Due to the action of wind, water, gravity, thermal expansion, and salt crystal expansion, small bits of rock are detached from distant parent structures, carried some distance, and deposited in another location to form a new layer of somewhat homogeneous material.
  • igneous rocks, Igneous rocks are called fire rocks and are formed either underground or above ground. Underground, they are formed when the melted rock, called magma, deep within the earth becomes trapped in small pockets. As these pockets of magma cool slowly underground, the magma becomes igneous rocks. Igneous rocks are also formed when volcanoes erupt, causing the magma to rise above the earth's surface. When magma appears above the earth, it is called lava. Igneous rocks are formed as the lava cools above ground.
  • metamorphic rocks are rocks that have "morphed" into another kind of rock. These rocks were once igneous or sedimentary rocks. How do sedimentary and igneous rocks change? The rocks are under tons and tons of pressure, which fosters heat build up, and this causes them to change. If you exam metamorphic rock samples closely, you'll discover how flattened some of the grains in the rock are.

what is the best way for maintaining the beauty of natural stone counter tops?
generally, natural stones have pores in the surface that causes water absorption and bacterial growth. for preventing these problems, natural stone should be sealed after installation and depending on the application and the amount of pores, it should be applied once or twice in a year.

What care and maintenance of the stone products are recommended?
Stone surfaces are very easy to maintain. Clean stone floors with warm water and a mild liquid soap. Never use acid cleansers or abrasive chemicals on stone. Natural stone should be sealed after installation and every one to two years thereafter, depending on its application.

How often do I need to apply sealer to my natural stone surfaces?
Many granites and other stones are porous, meaning they will readily absorb liquids and spills. When we impregnate the top with a sealer, we fill in those pores with the intention of prohibiting any new moisture from being absorbed. How well this works and how often you will need to be reseal depends on the porosity of the stone.
Most natural stone tops will require sealing about once per year. True igneous stones (dense, black, and extremely hard) may be essentially non-porous and never need to be sealed. On the other hand, feldspar-rich, lighter stones may need reapplications every few months to lessen the appearance of water spots and protect against stains.

Can I place a hot pan on my countertops straight out of the oven?
While granite an some of natural stones are unlikely to crack when exposed to high temperatures in the home, we recommend using trivets or coasters to protect your countertops from extreme and concentrated heat.

Can you scratch granite? What about other natural stones?
Granite is one of the hardest stones available and is composed of different minerals including quartz and feldspar, as well as other minerals of varying hardness and inclusion. We recommend that you do not cut on granite as it will quickly dull your knives. Diamonds or materials of a like hardness to granite will scratch granite.
Marble and soapstone are softer than granite and therefore more likely to scratch. Many people who choose these stones are less worried about the “lived with” look, but instead appreciate the changes that occur on their tops over time. Something to keep in mind when choosing your tops.

Does natural stone burn or stain?
You can't burn stone with ordinary use.  Most granite is highly resistant to staining.  The only caveat is that a few colors, when left unsealed, may absorb some moisture with prolonged contact.  Usually no evidence remains when the liquid is removed and the granite dries.  Liquid should be blotted, not wiped.

Can you chip or crack natural stone?
Granite and other natural stones will chip only in cases of severe abuse.  In the unlikely event that your natural stone is chipped, the mark can be filled with a natural stone dust and epoxy mixture. Granite will not crack with normal use.
